Blackboard Test Generator: Build a Test From Your Own Questions
Search for a blackboard test generator and most tools promise to write your test for you with AI. That is convenient until the AI invents a wrong answer on a graded exam. ExamParser takes the opposite approach: it is a deterministic generator that builds your Blackboard test from the questions you already have. Nothing is fabricated, so every answer is correct and verifiable.
What "generator" means here
A generator is simply a tool that produces a test file. It does not have to invent the content. ExamParser reads your question source — an Excel/CSV, a Word/DOCX, or a PDF — and generates a Blackboard-ready QTI 2.1 package you can import in minutes. The "generation" is the conversion and packaging, not the authorship.
Step 1: prepare your question source
- Excel / CSV — use a fixed column layout: question text, each answer option in its own column, the correct answer, and an optional image column. ExamParser expects these columns to stay in place; a shifted column silently drops a question.
- Word / DOCX — either a table of questions or questions written as headings with options beneath. ExamParser maps them into the same fixed structure.
- PDF — text-based or scanned (via OCR). The questions are extracted and reshaped, then packaged for Blackboard.
One rule applies to every format: each question may have at most one image, and it must be supplied as a URL — embedded or multiple images are not carried over.
Step 2: generate the Blackboard package
Upload your file
Drop in the Excel, Word, or PDF that holds your questions. ExamParser reads them exactly as written.
Map to fixed columns
For spreadsheets, ExamParser lines up your data with the required columns (question, options, correct answer, optional image URL). No content is added or rewritten.
Generate the QTI 2.1 zip
ExamParser outputs an IMS QTI 2.1 package — the format Blackboard imports natively as a question bank.
Step 3: import into Blackboard
Open your course
In Blackboard, open the course where the test will live (Ultra or Original course view).
Go to question banks / pools
Ultra: open Question Banks and choose Import. Original: Control Panel › Course Tools › Tests, Surveys, and Pools › Question Pools › Import Pool.
Import the QTI 2.1 zip
Select the package ExamParser generated. The items land in a reusable bank/pool you can attach to any test.
Why a deterministic generator beats an AI one
When a test is for practice, an AI guess is tolerable. When it is for a midterm or final, a hallucinated answer is a problem — for the student who gets it wrong and the instructor who has to defend it. Because ExamParser only reorganizes questions you authored, the output is auditable: what you wrote is what lands in Blackboard. The same source can also feed Canvas, Moodle, and other platforms, so you generate once and deploy everywhere.

Frequently asked questions
Is ExamParser an AI test generator?
No. ExamParser does not invent questions or answers. It is a deterministic generator: you supply the questions (from an Excel/CSV, Word/DOCX, or PDF file), and it generates a Blackboard-ready test package from exactly that content. Because the content comes from you, answers are always correct and verifiable.
How is this different from AI blackboard test generators?
AI generators write new questions from a topic and often produce wrong answers or hallucinated facts. ExamParser only reorganizes questions you already authored, so nothing is fabricated. For a graded test or exam, that difference is the whole point.
What file does ExamParser generate for Blackboard?
It generates an IMS QTI 2.1 package (a ZIP). In Blackboard you import it into a question bank or pool: Ultra course view, open Question Banks and choose Import; Original course view, go to Control Panel > Course Tools > Tests, Surveys, and Pools > Question Pools > Import Pool. The items then appear as a reusable bank you can attach to any test.
What source files can I use to generate a Blackboard test?
Excel/CSV (with fixed columns), Word/DOCX, or PDF. For spreadsheets, ExamParser expects a fixed column layout (question, each option, correct answer, optional image URL). Each question may have at most one image, supplied as a URL.
