Brightspace Quiz Converter: Any Document → Question Library
You have questions in Word, Excel, a PDF, or some stray CSV, and you want them in Brightspace. A "Brightspace quiz converter" is really a bridge: it reshapes whatever you have into the only two formats Brightspace's Question Library accepts — a CSV on Brightspace's official template, or an IMS QTI compliant ZIP. This guide explains both, and the rules that decide whether your import succeeds.
Path 1 — the vertical CSV (most common)
Brightspace's CSV is not the "one row per question" layout you may know from other tools. It is a vertical structure:
- Each question is a group of rows.
- Column A holds field keywords — the question text, each answer option, the correct answer, and so on.
- Correct options are marked with an asterisk (
*), not a separate yes/no column. - It must be saved as UTF-8 CSV using Brightspace's exact template columns. A CSV you invented with your own headers will not import — only the official template is recognized.
You can grab the template from the import dialog (Download template CSV), fill it in Excel, then save as UTF-8 CSV and upload.
Path 2 — the IMS QTI ZIP
The QTI route is for portable banks and migrations: publisher test banks (Pearson, McGraw-Hill), or a Blackboard 6.x–9.x export converted to D2L format. The ZIP is one of only two formats Question Library accepts, and it carries questions plus their referenced media together.
Step-by-step: convert → import
Pick your source
Excel/CSV, a Word document (table or prose), or a PDF (text or scanned via OCR).
Choose the target format
CSV for the most direct route, or QTI ZIP for a portable/migrated bank.
Apply Brightspace's rules
Vertical layout, official template columns, * on correct options, UTF-8 for the CSV path; valid IMS QTI for the ZIP path.
Import into Question Library
Activities › Quizzes › Question Library › Import › Upload a File, select the file, confirm.
Reuse everywhere
The bank now feeds quizzes, surveys, and self-assessments, with random draw and shuffle.
Why hand-converting wastes time
Reshaping a 40-question Word doc into Brightspace's vertical CSV — getting every field-keyword row right, placing each *, and saving UTF-8 — is slow and error-prone. One misplaced keyword row silently drops a question. A converter removes that labor.
Meet the tool built for this
ExamParser is a Brightspace quiz converter that reads questions from Excel, Word, and PDF and outputs a Brightspace-valid vertical CSV (official template columns, * markings, UTF-8) or an IMS QTI ZIP — ready for Question Library's Import › Upload a File. Its .xlsx source uses fixed column fields, enforces one image per question, and the same source can also feed Canvas, Moodle, and other platforms.

Frequently asked questions
What does a Brightspace quiz converter actually output?
Brightspace only imports two things: a CSV built on its official template (the vertical, field-keyword structure) and an IMS QTI compliant ZIP. A converter's job is to reshape your Word, Excel, PDF, or CSV questions into one of those two.
Why won't my own CSV import into Brightspace?
Brightspace's question-bank CSV must use its official template column structure, with each question laid out vertically (a group of rows, column A holding field keywords) and correct options marked with an asterisk (*), saved as UTF-8. A CSV with your own headers is rejected.
Which source documents can be converted?
Excel/CSV spreadsheets, Word documents (tables or prose), and PDFs (text or scanned via OCR) can all be converted into a Brightspace-ready CSV or QTI ZIP.
Can ExamParser act as the Brightspace quiz converter?
Yes. ExamParser reads Excel, Word, and PDF questions and outputs a Brightspace-valid vertical CSV (official template columns, * markings, UTF-8) or an IMS QTI ZIP, ready for Question Library's Import > Upload a File.
