Canvas Question Generator: Build a Question Bank From Your Files
A canvas question generator is most valuable when you are building a reusable asset — a question bank you will grade against all term. An AI that invents items is the wrong tool for that job: you cannot trust a bank you did not write. ExamParser generates your Canvas question bank from questions you already have, preserving every item verbatim and exporting a Canvas-ready QTI package.
Where your questions already live
ExamParser accepts the file you already keep your questions in, then maps it to the structure Canvas imports:
- Excel / CSV — fixed columns: question, each option, correct answer, optional image URL. The columns must stay in place; a shifted column silently drops a question.
- Word / DOCX — a table of questions, or questions as headings with options beneath. Mapped into the same structure.
- PDF — text-based or scanned via OCR. Extracted and reshaped for Canvas.
Across all formats, one rule holds: each question may have at most one image, and it must be a URL — embedded images or multiple images are not carried over.
Step 1: upload your question file
Drop in the spreadsheet, Word document, or PDF that holds your items. ExamParser reads them exactly as written.
Step 2: map to fixed columns
Align the data
For spreadsheets, ExamParser lines up your rows with the required columns (question, options, correct answer, optional image URL).
Preserve verbatim
Questions and answers are kept exactly as you wrote them. Nothing is added or rewritten.
Step 3: generate the question bank package
QTI 2.1 zip
ExamParser exports an IMS QTI 2.1 package — the format Canvas imports natively as a question bank.
Import and reuse
Settings › Import Course Content › QTI 2.1 .zip › import as a question bank, then pull items into any Canvas quiz with random draw and shuffle.
Why this beats an AI question generator for banks
A question bank is reused across every quiz and exam in a course. If even a few AI-invented items are wrong or off-topic, the bank becomes a liability you have to audit line by line. ExamParser keeps your items verbatim, so the bank is trustworthy by construction. The same source also feeds Brightspace, Moodle, and other platforms — generate the bank once, deploy it everywhere.

Frequently asked questions
Is this an AI canvas question generator?
No. ExamParser does not create questions. It generates a Canvas question-bank package from the questions you already have (in Excel/CSV, Word/DOCX, or PDF). Every item is exactly what you wrote, so the bank is accurate and reviewable.
How do I build a Canvas question bank from a spreadsheet?
Use a fixed column layout: question, each option, correct answer, and an optional image URL column. ExamParser maps that into a Canvas-ready QTI 2.1 zip. Each question may have at most one image, provided as a URL.
Can a generated question bank be reused across quizzes?
Yes. Once imported via Settings > Import Course Content (QTI 2.1 .zip, imported as a question bank), the items can be pulled into any Canvas quiz, with random draw and shuffle if you want varied attempts.
Why build the bank from my own questions instead of AI?
Because a question bank is a reusable asset you will grade against for a whole term. AI-invented items can be wrong or off-topic. ExamParser preserves your items verbatim, so the bank stays trustworthy and consistent.
