Canvas Quiz Generator: Build a Quiz From Your Own Questions
Search for a canvas quiz generator and most tools promise to write your quiz for you with AI. That is convenient until the AI invents a wrong answer on a graded assignment. ExamParser takes the opposite approach: it is a deterministic generator that builds your Canvas quiz from the questions you already have. Nothing is fabricated, so every answer is correct and verifiable.
What "generator" means here
A generator is simply a tool that produces a quiz file. It does not have to invent the content. ExamParser reads your question source — an Excel/CSV, a Word/DOCX, or a PDF — and generates a Canvas-ready QTI 2.1 package you can import in minutes. The "generation" is the conversion and packaging, not the authorship.
Step 1: prepare your question source
- Excel / CSV — use a fixed column layout: question text, each answer option in its own column, the correct answer, and an optional image column. ExamParser expects these columns to stay in place; a shifted column silently drops a question.
- Word / DOCX — either a table of questions or questions written as headings with options beneath. ExamParser maps them into the same fixed structure.
- PDF — text-based or scanned (via OCR). The questions are extracted and reshaped, then packaged for Canvas.
One rule applies to every format: each question may have at most one image, and it must be supplied as a URL — embedded or multiple images are not carried over.
Step 2: generate the Canvas package
Upload your file
Drop in the Excel, Word, or PDF that holds your questions. ExamParser reads them exactly as written.
Map to fixed columns
For spreadsheets, ExamParser lines up your data with the required columns (question, options, correct answer, optional image URL). No content is added or rewritten.
Generate the QTI 2.1 zip
ExamParser outputs an IMS QTI 2.1 package — the format Canvas imports natively as a question bank.
Step 3: import into Canvas
Open Import
In your Canvas course, go to Settings › Import Course Content.
Choose QTI 2.1
Select QTI 2.1 .zip as the content type and upload the package ExamParser generated.
Import as a question bank
Canvas imports the items into a question bank you can attach to any quiz, practice set, or exam.
Why a deterministic generator beats an AI one
When a quiz is for practice, an AI guess is tolerable. When it is for a midterm, a hallucinated answer is a problem — for the student who gets it wrong and the instructor who has to defend it. Because ExamParser only reorganizes questions you authored, the output is auditable: what you wrote is what lands in Canvas. The same source can also feed Brightspace, Moodle, and other platforms, so you generate once and deploy everywhere.

Frequently asked questions
Is ExamParser an AI quiz generator?
No. ExamParser does not invent questions or answers. It is a deterministic generator: you supply the questions (from an Excel/CSV, Word/DOCX, or PDF file), and it generates a Canvas-ready quiz package from exactly that content. Because the content comes from you, answers are always correct and verifiable.
How is this different from AI canvas quiz generators?
AI generators write new questions from a topic and often produce wrong answers or hallucinated facts. ExamParser only reorganizes questions you already authored, so nothing is fabricated. For graded work and exams, that difference is the whole point.
What file does ExamParser generate for Canvas?
It generates an IMS QTI 2.1 package (a ZIP). In Canvas you import it via Settings > Import Course Content > select the QTI 2.1 zip > choose to import as a question bank. The items then appear in your Canvas question bank.
What source files can I use to generate a Canvas quiz?
Excel/CSV (with fixed columns), Word/DOCX, or PDF. For spreadsheets, ExamParser expects a fixed column layout (question, each option, correct answer, optional image URL). Each question may have at most one image, supplied as a URL.
