Canvas Test Generator: Turn Your Exam File Into a Canvas Test
A canvas test generator is most useful exactly where AI is most risky: a graded exam. If a tool invents an answer on your midterm, the damage is done before anyone notices. ExamParser is a deterministic test generator — it builds your Canvas test from the exam you already wrote, so the deployed test is identical to the one you approved.
What you need before generating
Your exam already exists in some file. ExamParser accepts three source types, each mapped to the same fixed structure before export:
- Excel / CSV — fixed columns: question, each option, correct answer, optional image URL. Keep the columns in place; a shifted column drops a question silently.
- Word / DOCX — a table of questions, or questions as headings with options beneath. Mapped into the same structure.
- PDF — text-based or scanned via OCR. Extracted and reshaped for Canvas.
One constant across formats: each question may include at most one image, and it must be a URL — embedded images or multiple images are not carried over.
Step 1: load your exam file
Upload the spreadsheet, Word document, or PDF that holds your test. ExamParser reads the questions exactly as written — it does not rewrite, simplify, or "improve" them.
Step 2: map to fixed columns
Align the data
For spreadsheets, ExamParser lines up your rows with the required columns (question, options, correct answer, optional image URL).
Verify nothing changed
The questions and answers are preserved verbatim. What you wrote is what exports.
Step 3: generate the Canvas test package
QTI 2.1 zip
ExamParser exports an IMS QTI 2.1 package — the format Canvas imports natively as a question bank.
Import into Canvas
Settings › Import Course Content › QTI 2.1 .zip › import as a question bank, then attach the bank to a quiz set as your exam.
Why deterministic matters for tests
A practice quiz tolerates the occasional AI slip. A midterm does not. Because ExamParser only repackages questions you authored, the generated test is auditable end to end: the item students see is the item you wrote. The same source also feeds Brightspace, Moodle, and other platforms, so you generate the exam once and deploy it across systems without re-typing.

Frequently asked questions
Is this an AI canvas test generator?
No. ExamParser does not write exam questions for you. It generates a Canvas test package from the questions you already authored (in Excel/CSV, Word/DOCX, or PDF). For a graded test, that means every question and answer is exactly what you wrote.
Can I generate a Canvas test from a Word document?
Yes. A Word/DOCX with questions as a table, or as headings followed by answer options, is mapped into the fixed column structure and exported as a Canvas-ready QTI 2.1 zip. Each question may carry at most one image, supplied as a URL.
How do I import the generated test into Canvas?
In Canvas, open Settings > Import Course Content, choose QTI 2.1 .zip, and upload the package ExamParser generated. Import it as a question bank, then attach the bank to a quiz set as your exam.
Why not just use an AI test generator for an exam?
Because an exam grade depends on correct answers. AI generators invent content and occasionally get facts wrong. ExamParser only repackages questions you wrote, so the test you deploy is identical to the test you approved.
Ready to generate your Canvas test from your own exam?
Leave the AI guessing to practice sets. Upload the exam you trust and generate a Canvas-ready QTI package in minutes.
