How to Import Questions from a Spreadsheet into Quizizz
You have a spreadsheet of questions — a department shared bank, a publisher file, or last term's exam. Now you want them inside Quizizz. One thing to know first: Quizizz was rebranded as Wayground in June 2025. The product, the import button, and your existing library all carried over; you will still see "Quizizz" across guides and search, so this guide uses both names. Either way, Quizizz/Wayground does support importing a spreadsheet — including .xlsx — but it reads your file against a fixed set of column fields, and it allows only one image per question, supplied as a URL. This guide walks the whole move, including how to satisfy those three constraints without retyping a thing.
- .xlsx is supported — upload the Excel file you already have as the starting point.
- Column fields must be fixed — the question text, each answer option, and the correct-answer marker live in specific, named columns.
- Image = one URL — at most one image per question, and it must be an external link, not an embedded file.
Why Quizizz/Wayground needs a fixed-column sheet
Quizizz does not "read" a free-form spreadsheet. Its importer matches each row to a template: a question column, one column per answer option, and a column that flags the correct answer. If your headers or layout differ — extra notes columns, options stacked vertically, merged cells — those rows fail to map. So the real job is normalizing your sheet into fixed column fields before the import, not reformatting each question by hand.
Step-by-step: spreadsheet → Quizizz
Start from your .xlsx (or CSV)
Quizizz/Wayground supports xlsx import, so your existing Excel bank is a valid starting point. Open it and confirm there is one complete question per row.
Normalize to the fixed-column layout
Map each row to the fixed fields: question text, option 1–N, and the correct-answer column. Keep the question text and options as plain text; no rich formatting.
Handle images as a single URL
If a question needs a diagram, host it and put the link in the one image column. Embedded images and multiple images per question are not accepted by the importer.
Convert and import
Upload the normalized .xlsx to ExamParser, which produces a Quizizz-ready spreadsheet that already matches the fixed columns and the single-URL image rule, then import it into Wayground/Quizizz.
Verify the count
Check the imported question count against your sheet and spot-check answer keys. Fix anything in the spreadsheet, not inside Quizizz, then re-import.
The fixed-column rule, explained
When people say "column fields must be fixed," they mean the importer expects a predictable shape:
- Question — the stem, plain text.
- Answer options — each choice in its own column (e.g. Option 1, Option 2…).
- Correct answer — a marker (the option text or its index) in a dedicated column.
- Image (optional) — exactly one URL, or left blank.
Any extra column is ignored; any missing required column means that row is skipped. A normalizer that knows this fixed structure is what turns a messy bank into a clean import.
The one-image-URL rule, explained
Quizizz permits a single image per question, and it must be referenced by URL. If your source has an embedded picture (a screenshot in Excel, a photo in a DOCX, a scan in a PDF), the conversion step has to host that image and write its link into the one image column. Two images on one question, or an embedded/base64 image, will not import. Plan your material so each question needs at most one visual.
Meet the tool built for this
ExamParser is a converter purpose-built for moving exam content between spreadsheets and LMS platforms. Its spreadsheet flow supports .xlsx import, maps your rows into the fixed column fields Quizizz/Wayground expects, and enforces the one image URL per question rule — so the file you download imports cleanly the first time. The same source sheet can also feed Canvas, Moodle, and others.

Frequently asked questions
Does Quizizz support importing an .xlsx spreadsheet directly?
Yes. Quizizz (now Wayground) accepts spreadsheet imports, and .xlsx is a supported input. The catch is that it reads your file against a fixed set of columns, so your sheet must be mapped to that template before import.
What does "fixed column fields" mean for a Quizizz import?
Quizizz's spreadsheet template expects specific, fixed columns for each question: the question text, each answer option in its own column, and a column marking the correct answer. If your header names or layout differ, the rows will not map cleanly, so the file must be normalized to that fixed structure first.
Why can there be only one image per question, and why must it be a URL?
Quizizz allows a single image per question, and it must be an external URL rather than an embedded file. Any diagram or photo in your source has to be hosted and referenced by link in the one image column; embedded or multiple images are not supported by the importer.
Can I import into Quizizz from a CSV as well as Excel?
Yes. Both CSV and .xlsx feed the same fixed-column import template. Keep one question per row, match the fixed column fields, and provide a single image URL where needed.
Ready to move your sheet?
Upload the .xlsx you already have — fixed columns and the single image URL handled for you — and download a Quizizz-ready import file in minutes.
