How to Turn Your PDF into a Brightspace Quiz

Updated October 17, 2026 · 7 min read

You have a PDF full of questions and you want them inside Brightspace as a quiz. The catch: Brightspace's Question Library does not read PDFs. It only accepts two formats — a CSV built on its official template, or an IMS QTI compliant course package (ZIP). So the real job is converting the PDF into one of those two. This guide shows the exact path.

Remember: Brightspace imports through Activities › Quizzes › Question Library › Import › Upload a File. There is no "upload PDF" button. Convert first, then upload the CSV or QTI ZIP.

Why a PDF can't be uploaded directly

Brightspace's Question Library only recognizes two file types:

A PDF is neither. Before it can become a Brightspace quiz, its questions must be extracted and reshaped into one of those two formats.

Step 1: get the text out of the PDF

Step 2: choose your Brightspace target format

A

Vertical CSV (most common)

Download Brightspace's official template CSV from the import dialog. Fill it in Excel, mark correct options with *, and save as UTF-8 CSV. Brightspace's CSV is vertical: each question is a group of rows, with column A holding field keywords.

B

IMS QTI ZIP

A QTI-standard compressed package. Best when you want a portable bank, or when migrating a publisher test bank or a Blackboard export into Brightspace.

Step 3: the Brightspace CSV is vertical — not one row per question

This trips up most people. Brightspace's question-bank CSV is a vertical structure: one question occupies a group of rows, and column A carries field keywords (question text, each answer option, the correct answer, etc.). It is not "one question per spreadsheet row" like a Kahoot or Canvas import.

Two rules that decide whether the import succeeds:

Step 4: import into Question Library

1

Open Question Library

Go to Activities › Quizzes › Question Library in your Brightspace course.

2

Start the import

Click Import, then Upload a File. Choose your CSV or QTI ZIP.

3

Preview and confirm

Brightspace parses the file and shows what it found. Confirm, and the questions land in your bank.

4

Use the bank anywhere

The imported items become a reusable question bank — reference them in quizzes, surveys, and self-assessments, and use random draw / shuffle to vary each attempt.

Why this is worth automating

A single PDF of 50 questions, reshaped by hand into Brightspace's vertical CSV with correct * markings and UTF-8 encoding, is an hour of fiddly work — and one misplaced keyword row drops a whole question. ExamParser reads the PDF (text or scanned via OCR) and outputs a Brightspace-ready vertical CSV with the right * markings, saved as UTF-8, or an IMS QTI ZIP ready for the Question Library importer. The same source can also feed Canvas, Moodle, and other platforms.

Frequently asked questions

Can Brightspace import a PDF directly?

No. Brightspace's Question Library only accepts two formats: a CSV (Formatted text file) built on its official template, or an IMS QTI compliant course package (ZIP). A PDF must first be converted into one of those two.

What does the Brightspace CSV look like?

It is a vertical structure, not one row per question. Each question is a group of rows where column A holds field keywords (question text, each option, the correct answer, etc.). Correct options are marked with an asterisk (*). It must be saved as UTF-8 CSV using Brightspace's exact template columns.

Where do I upload the converted file in Brightspace?

Go to Activities > Quizzes > Question Library, click Import > Upload a File, and choose your CSV or QTI ZIP. The imported items become a question bank you can reuse in quizzes, surveys, and self-assessments.

Can ExamParser convert a PDF into the Brightspace format?

Yes. ExamParser extracts questions from a PDF (text or scanned via OCR) and outputs a Brightspace-ready vertical CSV with the correct (*) markings, saved as UTF-8, or an IMS QTI ZIP ready for the Question Library importer.

Ready to turn your PDF into a Brightspace quiz?
