PDF to Kahoot: Turn a PDF Quiz Into a Kahoot (No Retyping)

Updated October 22, 2026 · 7 min read

You have a quiz — an old exam, a handout, a publisher worksheet — sitting in a PDF. You want it live in Kahoot. The catch: Kahoot cannot read PDFs. There is no "import PDF" option. Kahoot's only bulk path is its official .xlsx spreadsheet template with fixed columns. So the real task is two steps: get the questions out of the PDF, then reshape them into the template. This guide covers both, including the part people forget — a scanned PDF needs OCR before anything else.

Key fact: Kahoot has no native import for PDF, Word, CSV, or plain text. The single bulk entry point is the official .xlsx template. A PDF has to be extracted into that template (and saved as .xlsx) before Kahoot will read it.

Why a PDF is the hardest source to bridge

Unlike a spreadsheet, a PDF is a fixed layout — sometimes just a picture of a page. That creates three problems a CSV never has:

The fixed columns you must produce

Whatever the PDF looked like, the destination is always the same template:

Step-by-step: PDF → Kahoot

1

Get the official template

In Kahoot, New kahoot → Add question → Spreadsheet → download the blank .xlsx. Keep its header row exact.

2

Extract the questions (OCR if needed)

Open the PDF. If it is text-based, copy the content out. If it is scanned, run OCR first so the stems, options, and keys become selectable text. Watch for OCR slips like "0" read as "O".

3

Map each question into the template

For each item, place the stem in Question, the options in Answer 1–6, seconds in Time limit, and rewrite the key as position numbers in Correct answers.

4

Handle diagrams as one URL

If a PDF question shows a figure, host that image and put its URL in Media. Kahoot allows at most one image per question, as a URL.

5

Save as .xlsx and upload

Save as .xlsx (not PDF) and upload it on Kahoot's Spreadsheet screen. Preview the parsed questions and check for skipped or misread rows.

Skip the manual extraction

With a multi-page PDF, the manual route means reading every line and re-typing every option — exactly where errors and dropped questions come from. ExamParser reads a PDF (text or scanned via OCR), pulls out the stems, options, and answer keys, maps them to Kahoot's fixed column fields, rewrites the key as position numbers, enforces the one-image-URL rule, and outputs the official Kahoot .xlsx ready to upload. The same source can also feed Canvas, Moodle, and other platforms.

Frequently asked questions

Can Kahoot import a PDF file directly?

No. Kahoot has no PDF import — and no Word, CSV, or plain-text import either. Its only bulk entry point is the official .xlsx spreadsheet template with fixed columns. To get a PDF into Kahoot, you first extract the questions from the PDF and reshape them into that .xlsx template, then upload the .xlsx on the Spreadsheet screen.

Does a scanned or image-only PDF work?

Yes, but only after OCR. A scanned PDF contains pictures of pages, not selectable text, so the questions must be recognized first. A tool like ExamParser runs OCR to pull the text out, then extracts the question stems, options, and answer keys before building the Kahoot template. Always proofread OCR output — stray characters in a question stem are easy to miss.

How are images inside a PDF question handled?

Kahoot holds at most one image per question, and it must be a URL — the PDF's embedded pictures are not carried over. If a question in the PDF needs its diagram, host that image and put its URL in the Media column of the .xlsx template. Multi-image questions (e.g. a figure plus a graph) must be flattened into a single hosted image.

What is the fastest way to convert a PDF quiz to Kahoot?

Extract the questions (text or OCR), then map each one into Kahoot's fixed columns — Question, Answer 1–6, Time limit, Correct answers — with the answer key as position numbers. ExamParser does the extraction and the column mapping in one pass and outputs the official .xlsx ready to upload, so you skip the manual copy-paste.

Ready to turn that PDF into a Kahoot?

Extract the questions from your PDF — text or scanned — reshape them into Kahoot's official .xlsx template (fixed columns, position-number answers, one image URL per question), and your worksheet becomes a live kahoot.
