Schoology Quiz Generator: Make a Quiz From Your Questions

Updated October 24, 2026 · 9 min read

Search for a Schoology quiz generator and you will hit the same wall every Schoology user hits: there is no "paste your document and get a quiz" button. Schoology imports QTI only — not Word, not PDF, not CSV. That makes a generator not a nice-to-have but the only bridge. ExamParser is a deterministic Schoology quiz generator: it turns the questions you already have into the QTI 2.1 package Schoology accepts — no AI, no invented answers.

The one-line difference: AI Schoology quiz generators create questions and sometimes get them wrong, then hand you a format Schoology can't read. ExamParser generates a Schoology quiz from your own questions and emits the QTI package Schoology actually imports.

The Schoology constraint that makes a generator necessary

Schoology's bulk import is QTI-bound. If a "generator" emits anything else — a DOCX, a CSV, a web form — you are back to manual entry. So the first question to ask any Schoology quiz generator is simply: does it output QTI?

What Schoology importsNotes
QTI 1.2 / 2.1 / 2.2The supported bulk path. A valid package with a manifest imports questions and quizzes.
Blackboard / Edmastery / ExamView zipsVendor-specific packages Schoology also recognizes.
Word / PDF / CSVNot imported. This is exactly the gap the generator fills by emitting QTI.

What the generator produces

ExamParser emits a QTI 2.1 package — a .zip with a correct imsmanifest.xml and one assessmentItem per question, using only item types Schoology maps cleanly (multiple choice, true/false, short answer, matching). The correct answer is copied verbatim from your source; nothing is decided by a model.

Your source inputs

One rule applies to every source: each question may carry at most one image, and it must be a URL — embedded or multiple images are not carried over into QTI.

Step-by-step: generate a Schoology quiz from your questions

1

Gather your questions

Pull them from the spreadsheet, Word file, PDF, or text you already use.

2

Convert to QTI 2.1

ExamParser maps each item into a Schoology-compatible QTI 2.1 package with a valid manifest.

3

Import into Schoology

Course → Materials → Add → Import from QTI. Upload the zip and review the imported questions.

4

Build the quiz

Assemble the imported questions into a Schoology quiz with your own timing and attempts settings.

Troubleshooting: why your QTI fails to import into Schoology

This is the part that quietly wastes an evening. If Schoology rejects or partially imports your package, check these four in order:

1. Wrong QTI version

Schoology expects QTI 1.2, 2.1, or 2.2. A bare XML file, or a QTI 3 draft, will not map. ExamParser targets QTI 2.1, the version Schoology documents most completely.

2. Missing or malformed manifest

The imsmanifest.xml is what tells Schoology which items belong to the package. If it is absent, misnamed, or points at files that aren't in the zip, the import stalls or imports nothing. A correct generator writes the manifest for you.

3. An extra folder layer in the zip

If the zip wraps everything in a top-level folder, some import flows miss the manifest. The manifest should sit at the archive root alongside the item files.

4. Unsupported item types

Exotic types (certain matrix, cloze, or essay-with-rubric shapes) may not map to a Schoology question type and get dropped. Sticking to multiple choice, true/false, short answer, and matching avoids silent losses. ExamParser restricts output to well-supported types for exactly this reason.

Why a no-AI generator beats an AI one

An AI Schoology quiz generator is doubly risky here: it can invent a wrong answer and hand you a format Schoology can't read, so you re-do the work by hand anyway. Because ExamParser only reorganizes questions you authored into the QTI package Schoology ingests, the output is auditable and import-ready. The same source also feeds Canvas, Blackboard, and Brightspace, so you generate once and reuse everywhere. For real course content, deterministic beats generative every time.

Frequently asked questions

Is this a Schoology quiz generator that uses AI to write questions?

No. ExamParser does not invent questions or answers. It is a deterministic Schoology quiz generator: you supply the questions (from Excel/CSV, Word/DOCX, PDF, or plain text), and it builds the QTI 2.1 package Schoology imports. Because the content comes from you, every answer is correct and verifiable.

Why must the generator output QTI for Schoology?

Schoology does not read Word, PDF, or CSV directly. Its only bulk import path is QTI (1.2 / 2.1 / 2.2) and a few vendor-specific zips. So any Schoology quiz generator must produce QTI — that is the format Schoology actually ingests. A tool that 'generates a quiz' but emits anything else leaves you copy-pasting by hand.

My QTI package won't import into Schoology — why?

The most common causes are: (1) wrong QTI version — Schoology expects QTI 1.2/2.1/2.2, not a bare XML file; (2) a missing or malformed imsmanifest.xml; (3) a zip whose root has an extra folder layer; (4) question types Schoology doesn't map (e.g. some filler/matrix types). ExamParser emits a Schoology-validated QTI 2.1 zip with a correct manifest and only well-supported item types, which removes the first three.

What source files can I start from?

Excel/CSV with a fixed column layout, Word/DOCX (table or heading-and-list), text-based or scanned PDF (via OCR), or plain text. Each question may carry at most one image, supplied as a URL, because Schoology's QTI import does not embed multiple local images.

Ready to generate a Schoology quiz from your own questions?

Skip the AI guesswork and the manual re-entry. Upload the questions you already trust — spreadsheet, Word, PDF, or text — and build the Schoology-ready QTI 2.1 package with correct answers and one image URL per question.
